Bingo Association outraged by lottery advert

UK Bingo operators believe the new advert that promotes the National Lottery’s Flamin’ Hot Bingo scratchcard offends the traditional bingo industry, which is going through a tough time due to government policies.

The ad features the image of an elderly woman on her mobility cart in front of a bingo venue with a “closed” sign. With the sound of a scratchcard, the image changes to the same lady with modern clothes in a Miami-style beach, speeding off on her enhanced, powerful scooter.

eGala Bingo Hall in Nuneaton up for sale

It is known that the bingo industry is not at its “golden years” and day by day there are more land based bingo clubs being shut down due to regulations.

The former Gala Bingo hall in Nuneaton has been put up for sale for £1.5 million, although the price for removing asbestos from the building, which stands proudly since 1937 in Abbey Street, is not included in this price. The building used to be a Ritz cinema during the Second World War and served its movie fans until 1984, when it became a bingo hall.

An early Christmas present arrived for a Nursing student from the city of Grimsby in Lincolnshire, England, who won a prize of £22.500 for completing her card after 44 calls at her local bingo club.

It was her boyfriend who paid for the tickets and the woman declared that even though the prize will be claimed by her, it will be deposited in an account shared with her boyfriend, with whom she has already many plans to spend it.

Bingo halls in danger

“The Bingo Association estimates that one in three bingo clubs will close.” The alarming statement was pronounced by Dan Waugh, director of investor relations for the UK’s Rank Group. Following the smoking ban, a lot of bingo halls have seen their revenues decrease.

The main problem is heavy taxation. “Bingo is the most heavily taxed form of gambling,” Waugh said. A spokesman from the Treasury argued the taxation rate faced by the bingo industry is the same one that applies to lottery, gaming and machines.

Towards Bingo Liberalization

The French tradition of toughly regulating gambling activities – including bingo - on its jurisdictions might be about to change. Its interior minister, Michele Aillot-Marie, said that he is partial to the liberalization of online gambling with a view to giving French casinos online presence.

Alliot-Marie also mentioned this should be done “without lowering the level of vigilance that operators and the state must maintain on the quality and offering of games.”
